An enigmatic tower on a hill...

My experience, Explo description:

Ernaginum was the most important road junction of Roman Gaul. Here met the Via Agrippa (Arles-Lyons) and the Via Aurelia (Aurelian way, from Rome by the coast) and the Via Domitia (from Rome to Spain). It was an important city whose economy depended mainly on these 3 major roads.

On the 12th century, a fort was built on the remains of the old antique city.

The tower is in a particularly good shape. Have a look at the stones: each is sculpted with the initials of its sculptor.

Around the tower, you can look for other vestiges. Else, have a look at the abandoned quarry (200m south).

My personal recommendations:

Have a look at the exceptional Saint Gabriel Romanic chapel (200m downhill).

How getting there:

It is located south-east of Tarascon, in the western side of Alpilles mountains, at the crossraods of D33 and N570 roads.

A tip to eat:

Take a pic nic and eat in the olive field!
