Lac de Joux is a big lake that freezes during winter season, which allows you to do a walk or do some ice skating. To see a lake this size frozen on its entirety is impressive enough, and then be able to walk from one town to another makes it even more interesting.

My experience, Explo description:

Lake Joux, in the heart of the Vaudois Jura, is the largest lake in the entire Jura massif. In winter, it turns into the largest natural ice rink in Europe and in summer it attracts sports fans and lovers of nature. In winter, the frozen lake becomes a huge ice rink, and a paradise for skaters and ice-walkers. Otherwise, the rest of the Vallée de Joux in winter is mainly an endless cross-country skiing paradise, with about 200 kilometres of prepared tracks in virtually untouched nature.

Lake Joux (1,004 m), together with Lake Brenet and Lake Ter, is situated between the Risoud mountain chain and the Mont Tendre massif (1,679 m). Its surface covers 9,5 square km. It is fed by the rivers Orbe and Lionne, whose waters mostly infiltrate into the chalky depths of the lake and flow out at the caves of Vallorbe.

The wind conditions around Lake Joux are particularly appreciated by windsurfers. At the height of summer, the water may reach a temperature of 24°. The natural beaches are sought after by people in search of natural and romantic settings. Campsites, hikes, and bike tours are the ideal ways of enjoying the magnificent scenery around Lake Joux in any season.

If you wish to do some ice skating on a natural lake, this is the place to do so. Check the web site bellow to make sure the lake is frozen and open for people to walk on.

This web site will also give you some additional information about the area:

My personal recommendations:

I went there on February 2012 and the entire lake was completely frozen. We did an ice-walk from one village to another and did some ice skating as well. Skate rentals are available on the lake at the bridge near the train station in Le Pont. On weekdays only, skates can be rented from Cordonnerie Mouquin in Le Sentier, tel: 021-845-5404.

Check lake conditions from December to March at the web site shown above.

How getting there:

From the International Airport of Geneva-Cointrin, it only takes you 60 minutes to get to Vallée de Joux. From Lausanne, the capital of the canton of Vaud, it takes 45 minutes and from Bern around 90 minutes.
