The Islamic Centre and the New Grand Friday Mosque , Male’

The Islamic Centre and the New Grand Friday Mosque, named Masjid-al Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu-al-A'z'am is just the opposite of the Sultan’s Park, is not only the most famous architectural landmark in Malé, but also houses one of the biggest and finest mosques in the Southeast Asian region.

The spectacular golden dome in all its majesty dominates the skyline, when approaching Male’, from any direction. The ornate woodcarvings and Arabic calligraphy inside the golden dome and the minaret are magnificent tributes to the talents of Maldivians.

The building symbolizes the importance of Islamic religion, which had ruled all aspects of life in the country for centuries. Completed in 1984, the Centre consists of a grand mosque with its dominant golden dome and the slender Minaret decorate the facade of Male' which is big enough to accommodate over five thousand worshipers at a time, an Islamic library, conference hall where several important seminars of International Level, such as The SAARC General Meeting, have been held , classrooms and offices.

Nearly all visitors to Male' take time to visit this magnificent landmark.
