A Sherman tank of the Free French Forces (Force Françaises Libres), lonely witness of the fightings in Marseille in 1944...

My experience, Explo description:

Following the Allied landings in Provence (August 15th, 1944) an insurrection broke out in Marseille on August 20th. The city was surrounded by French General Monsabert and Colonel Chapman launched the first attacks to conquest the city. The fighting will last from August 23rd to 28th.

On 25th August, the Moroccan Tabor stormed the hill of Notre Dame de la Garde. They were backed by tanks. The Jeanne d'Arc was one of them. It was attacked with incendiary grenade and destroyed. Its 3 occupants were killed instantly.

The tank was restored in 1946 as a memorial.

My personal recommendations:

Have a look at the battle tank and go up the hill to the amazing Notre Dame de la Garde church!

How getting there:

The battle tank is down the "Montée de la Bonne Mère" street.
