An impressive castle with a little chapel...

My experience, Explo description:

Aumelas Castle was built by Guilhem Aumelas in 1036. Aumelas was a powerful lordship and his family were ancestors of the Orange-Nassau family, Royal families of the Netherlands and England.

This castle was the seat of a strong local authority. To cope with it and reinforce the King's leadership in the region, Richelieu ordered to dismantle it.

Have a look at the castle impressive ruins, at the dungeon and the vestiges of the old chapel

Down the castle, you can visit the St. Saviour church, built later in the 13th century. Very nice vault.

My personal recommendations:

This Explo is very off the path. It is located in a wild area. This is a very impressive Explo and I really advise you to go there!

How getting there:

From Aumelas, take the D139 and then D114 roads to Cournonterral. Drive about 5-6km and once you have reached the highlands, turn right on the dirt track. Drive 2 km. Park the car and walk.

A tip to eat:

Take a pic nic!
