Also known as "monument to the Defenders of Leningrad", it commemorates the siege of Leningrad and the heroism of the population.

My experience, Explo description:

The siege started in September 1941 to finish in January 1944. It lasted 900 days, it is estimated that there were 1 million missing (1/3 of the population) including 800,000 deaths from starvation, and 20,000 in the bombing. Refuelling was in winter by Lake Ladoga...

In August 1942 was played Symphony N°7 so-called "Leningrad" composed there by Shostakovich. It was broadcasted by loudspeakers in the streets of the city and in the direction of the German lines.

It should be noted that Stalin was opposed to that part of the civilian population was evacuated, which would have decreased the number of victims.

Despite the bombing, the city centre has been relatively spared. On the other hand the destruction were very important in outlying districts and in the areas occupied by the Germans. The Palace of Peterhof, Pushkin and Pavlosk were ransacked.

Inaugurated in 1975, a flame there was never interrupted.

The monument is a large square shape, looking like an incomplete circle, symbolizing the rupture of the encirclement.

Two groups of statues represent different fighters: sailors, soldiers... and the suffering of the civilian population. This statues were desgined by Mikhail Anouchkine.

The Memorial hosts an impressive remembrance Hall, containing a huge model of the line blockade.
