Located near of Aubenas, Ailhon is a village which has retained the charm of its sandstone houses, protecting its lovely romanic church of the 13th century.

My experience, Explo description:

Between 1586 and 1591, fightings between Catholics and Protestants were at their apogee. In 1593, to celebrate the accession of Henry IV to the catholic religion (an important step towards the pacification of the Kingdom), an Elm tree is planted (as in many villages, on order of the minister Sully): One can still admire some impressive remains of its monumental trunk (exposed in the background of the Church).

In 1670, as a result of false rumours concerning of increases in taxes, peasants, armed with forgery and forks, revolted. The repression by the armies of the King was severe.

During the 19th century, some mining companies settled around to exploit an iron field.

The most beautiful gem Ailhon is its Church, which oldest parts date back to the 12th century. It was enlarged and revised at the beginning of the 16th century (very smoothly) and now host many remarkable sculptures.

It is necessary to walk in the village streets to admire its very beautiful houses, with many interesting windows and doors.

Around of the village, there is the predominance of maritime pine forests. They were introduced in 1825 and were mainly intended for the timbering of mines galleries.
