Aït-Benhaddou is a must go: this kasbah and its ksar have been classified since 1987 on the UNESCO list... And the David Lean and "Lawrence of Arabia" fans will recognize a familiar place!

My experience, Explo description:

As the place has been classified on the UNESCO list, it has been renoved for years.

The village is divided in two parts : the modern part (where you can park your car) is not really interesting and full of tourist shops. Once you have crossed the oued, you will enter into the ksar : this is the interesting part to visit !

Go on the top of the ksar : you will have an amazing view over the village. There, you will also see the vestiges of the granaries and the former bank...

Walk along the little streets : they are charming.

My personal recommendations:

Usually, a guy stands at the entrance of the ksar (when you have crossed the oued)and asks for 10DH (1 euro) for the ksar "conservation". Unfortunately, it is impossible to determine whether this guy is "official" or not... Thus, if you don’t want to pay, enter the ksar on its right side (once you have crossed the oued) : moreover, by doing so, you will pass in front of the vestiges of the "Jewel of the Nile" door and the "Lawrence of Arabia" Kaaba... The better is maybe to ask for a guided tour : it costs about 20DH (ask for Abdou at the snak boarding the car park in front of the La Kasbah inn).

How getting there:

Aït-Benhaddou is about 20km (NW) from Ouarzazate. Drive about 15km on the road going to Marrakech (N9), then turn right (N) when you arrive at Tikirt and drive 5km more.

A tip to eat:

Go to La Kasbah inn, and enjoy the view over the village from the terrace.

A tip to sleep:

Many hotels and inns stand in Aït-Benhaddou.
