Drive on a small one-way tarred road to discover small canyons coloured with different soil colours.

My experience, Explo description:

The tint of the soil comes from the deposit of minerals and volcanic ashes.

About 5km north on the hwy 178, go to the Golden canyon. A nice walk (1.5km) goes to the wonderful red cathedral. And if you want more, you can pursue your walk to the Zabroskie point (6.5km).

My personal recommendations:

If you want to go out of the beaten track and to have an adventurous drive, instead of driving on the hwy 178, you can drive on a lane

How getting there:

Artist’s drive is on the Badwater rd (hwy 178) (from Shoshone to Furnace creek).
Westside Road : you take the Westside Rd about 15 miles away from Shoshone, on the hwy 178, between Ashford Junction and Ashford Mill.

A tip to eat:

No place to eat there. Closest restaurants : Furnace creek or Shoshone.

A tip to sleep:

Furnace creek, Stovepipe wells village or Beatty.
>There is a camping at Furnace creek. There is also a motel (it is quite expensive, about $270 for a night, and full most of the time, but it is really worth sleeping there, because of its unique ambiance) : Furnace Creek Inn : 760 786 2345, from may to October.
>Motel. $100 per night. 760 786 2387.
>Else, you will find more accommodations (and casinos for amateurs) at Beatty.
