A large collection tracing the rich history of the country, from the Habsburg Monarchy at the 16th century until 1945.

My experience, Explo description:

This is Vienna’s oldest museum.

The first part covers the Thirty Years War, the second Turkish Siège of Vienna as well as the era of Prince Eugène of Savoy and Maria Theresa.

The part dealing with the history between the 2 world wars is particularly interesting.

Do not miss either the Austrian navy section, which was once one of the most powerful of the world. Have a look at the metal model of the Viribus Unitis battleship, the largest model in the world of this type.

Outside, behind the museum, several tanks are exposed in a garden.

My personal recommendations:

An Audio Guide will be provided to you for free when you buy your entrance ticket. (English, German, French).

How getting there:

See the joined map. The museum is about 10mn by feet from Vienna Südbahnhof.

A tip to eat:

I really apreciated the terrace at the rear of the museum, where tanks are exposed, but where there is also a little café, to snack and drink.
