A very well conserved feudal castle to visit!

Explo History and Description:

The Avully castle was built on the 12th century and probably erected on the vestige of Roman ruins. It was dedicated to protect local lords from the numerous attacks of French, German or Spanish soldiers (Savoy was indeed an independent country).

The castle was burnt in 1307, and re-built in 1335. In 1499, it was purchased by the Geneva district, and attacked in 1603 by troops coming from an other district : Bern.

In 1701, the castle was occupied by Louis the 14th’s French troops, and then by the Spanish soldiers. The fort was definitely occupied by the French Revolution troops in 1792.

In the castle, you can visit a little museum dealing with the history of Savoy.

There is also a strange but interesting collection of feudal weapons : catapults, cannons, armours, lances...

At least, there is a nice little garden.

My experience and personal tips:

Do not miss to have a look at the numerous frescoes still in a good shape lying a bit every where on the castle walls.
