In a quiet little village of the Vosges mountains, the Notre-Dame d'Autrey Abbey was built at the 12th century. It also gathers a charming Botanical Garden and a few rooms to host you in a very original environment.

Explo History and Description:

Founded in 1149 by the Bishop of Metz (Etienne de Bar) at the return of the second crusade, the Abbey of Autrey was sold at the French Revolution. It became a wire mill (piano ropes, nails and pins), and then a seminar in 1859.

Taken up by the State in 1905 to be transformed in a hospice, it became again a seminar from 1931 to 1975.

In 1982, the Catholic community of the Beatitudes answered the call of Saint-Dié Bishop and came to occupy the premises.

The Church is a beautiful architectural compromise between the Gothic and Renaissance style. The chapel of Saint-Hubert, Northeast, is undoubtedly the most remarkable Renaissance building in the Vosges.

INSIDE, we note the frescoes and painted vaults, as well as the 19th century stained glass.

Ask to see the Chapter Hall (12th century), with beautiful Romanic arches remaining of the former monastery.

The garden : the Abbey has above all a beautiful park (4 hectares), with an original botanical garden with 2500 species : hydrangeas, rhododendrons, old roses, glycines... You can buy plants in a shop : 550 varieties of old roses, plants of acid soil, trees, shrubs, hydrangeas and climbing plants.

My experience and personal tips:

The abbey also hosts many concerts and exhibitions.
