400 hectares of dams, reservoirs, fish and swamps, where many migratory birds breed.

There, you can make a walking tour through protected sea areas, deep in the Bassin d'Arcachon...

My experience, Explo description:

The domain was created in the late 18th century by the Marquis de Civrac. On old pre-salted lands, almost always covered by tides, he created salt marshes.

The work generated by this project was enormous, and almost 2 million tons of earth were needed to build dikes to isolate the future saline from the water of the Bassin d’Arcachon.

When salt production declined, the salt marshes were converted into ponds for extensive farming of fish.

Today, this land has been acquired and managed by the Conservatoire du Littoral (French Coastal Conservation Agency), which is trying to maintain some traditional agricultural activities.

However, the abandonment of some activities, including fishing, results in poor maintenance of dikes.

This land is a transition between the sea and the forest, where freshwater and salt water meet, with a rich flora and fauna...

The visit of the domain can be made from the cities of Audenge or Lanton.

Given the distance and the prohibition of cycling, 3 "tours" may be offered :

  • The whole tour (13 km) : reserved for good walkers. You will visit the entire area from the cities Audenge or Lanton (follow the signs "Domaine de Certes"). The return to the starting point is along the bike track that connects the 2 cities.
  • The tour from Audenge city (at a place called "Le Piquet" or "Le Pavillion") and then return to the starting point (5.5km and 6.5km go and back) : embellished with numerous panels, this pleasant tour allow you to discover the domain beautiful landscapes and appreciate the final superb views offered on the Bassin d’Arcachon.
  • The tour from the town of Lanton to the "Pointe de Branne" or at a place called "Le Pavillion" (7.5 and 9.5 miles go and back) : devoid of explanatory panels, this journey is only dedicated to discover the true domain along the Bassin d’Arcachon. Despite this lack of signs, this course is still very beautiful.
My personal recommendations:

The domain castle is a property of the Conservatory : you can walk around, but unfortunately can’t visit it.
