Explo History and Description:
The col de Chapelotte (Chapelotte pass) is 447m high only. It is a major communication axis between Lorraine and the first Vosges valley.
On the 22th August 1914, the Zeppelin observation N°8 from Strasbourg is destroyed at the Chapelotte.
After the German pull-back in September 1914, the front is established on a line going through Badonviller, the Chapelotte pass and Senones. For the German, who are still in French territory, the position is only defensive. They settle "comfortably" with concrete shelters and expect.
On the side French side, on the contrary, the strategy is to get back to the "Holy Nation territory" : this offensive will result in costly and unnecessary fights. The Côte 542 became one of the most violent points of the war in the whole Vosges mountains.
Due to the fighting in surface (bombing, gas, spear-flame, machine guns...) the soldiers began to dig galleries under enemy lines, and then filled them with explosives, causing huge explosions.
The first German mine exploded at Côte 542 on the 8th June 1915. Till the end of the battle, hundreds of meters galleries and wells have been dug. 55 mines, including 38 French exploded on a 300 metres large front, using more than 300 tons of explosives.
The last French Gallery was 120 metres deep : the greatest depth reached in this type of fight on all the Great War fronts.
For lovers of history, an episode of the mine war :

The pass and the surrounding summits still keep all those fightings stigma.

Le sentier des Roches is part of the GR 533 (white and red tags), between La Vierge de Clarisse and the Chapelotte pass. The trail is 2.5 km long, easy and picturesque. You will see fantastic rocks and the famous Grotte des Poilus (Poilus Cave). This area is full of caves. The most spacious one was dug by the 43rd French Infantry Regiment who served there for the whole war. It is 1.5 km away from the Chapelotte pass.
The pass : La Chapelle.
The chapel was built in 1895 by Charles Cartier-Bresson. It was partly destroyed during the first world war. Repaired in 1924. It recalls the old cemetery where the French soldiers were buried.
The fountain :
A sandstone fountain has been built at the pass by the 338ème Infantry Regiment soldiers.
For sport fans, a 10 km circuit : 3h30 to go, with a 600m declivity.
Parking at the Chapelotte pass.
In front of the fountain, go south on GR533 (red and white tags) and follow the sentiers des Roches which passes through the Grotte des Poilus and leads to the D182 road at La Vierge de Clarisse.
Follow this road to Pierre Percée. On the left side, take a trail running along the base of beautiful sandstone cliffs, leading to Salm castle ruins (see related article). Beautiful view on the lake. Go down to the village through the cemetery and have a look at the Sartorio sculpture.
From Pierre Percée, take the trail going south that bypasses Ortomont on its Western side. Beautiful rocks. Go down to Celles from the Menelle. Cross Chalarupt watercourse and take the trail that goes up to the Roche de Soye (Hazon, 498m). You will reach the ridge.
Go to the Roches de Pierre à Cheval, and the to the Dame de Galle viewpoint. From there, join the pass and go back to the car.
