In the heart of a solitary valley with a small river, surrounded by chestnut forests, emerge the Chartreuse de Glandier sharp steeples.

My experience, Explo description:

In the 13th century, Archambauld VI, of the Comborn family, killed a monk who was opposed to the election of one of his nephews as Abbot. For his repentance, the Pope Gregory IX ordered him to build this Chartreuse...

The monastery was saccaged during the hundred years war (1408). But it was rebuilt and even more important.

During the wars of religion in the 16th century, the Glandier monastery was repeatedly plundered and ruined.

A new period of prosperity lasted almost 200 years, with the support of the Pompadour family. But at the French revolution, the goods were confiscated and monks hunted.

What remained of the Carthusian monastery was purchased in 1817 by Mr. Lafarge who wanted to make a forge there. But this man died, poisoned said by his wife to arsenic.

Carthusian bought the remains in 1860 and re-built the ruins by using red coloured bricks, with a splendid effect. But they left the place in 1904.

The monastery became property of the city of Paris in 1920, and was transformed into a sanatorium. As tuberculosis significantly declined, the building was then used as a centre for youth with disabilities.

Outside limited periods when you can visit the buildings, you can only discover the exterior. But the Chartreuse deserve the trip.

My personal recommendations:

Come by car from Vigeois by road D7e1 : you will have the surprise to discover this small gem suddenly at the end of a curve...
