My experience, Explo description: 

Christiania is a partially self-governing neighbourhood of about 850 residents, covering 34 hectares in Copenhagen.

Christiania has established semi-legal status as an independent community, but has been a source of controversy since its creation in a squatted military area in 1971.

Its open cannabis trade was tolerated by authorities until 2004. Since then, measures for normalising the legal status of the community have led to conflicts, and negotiations are ongoing.

Whatever people can say, Christiana is still alive and is one of the rare libertarian experiment in Europe.

Something funny : Curiously, at least until 2006, Christiana population is about 2/3 of men and 1/3 women.

This place is interesting to visit to see how an utopian community is organized. A brochure (with a plan and what to see), is almost everywhere for sale (DKK 10).

Make the tour of the numerous art galleries. (And drink one or two glasses on the way in the various bars !).

My personal recommendations: 

Go out of the Christiana’s " tourist zone " (South west side : main streets) to go north/east to the ancient ramparts and canals : this side of Christiana is a more authentic and residential district, and the tourists don’t usually go there.

How getting there: 

By car or bus. Christiana is located on Christianshavn. Christiana is a pedestrian area.

A tip to eat: 

Many bars at Christiana.

A tip to sleep: 

No place to sleep there.

Love it, love it. Enjoy the atmosphere walking through "staden" (as we call it here) relaxedly a sunny sunday afternoon. Discover all the funny houses and types of people. Check out Loppen (cafe/restaurant) or enjoy your picnic in the beautiful scenery around the lakes.
