Close to Orgnac-sur-Vézère is located a fortress built during the 11th century on a rocky spur surrounded on 3 sides by the Vézère river: the Comborn castle. These ruins are all remaining of one of the most ancient and powerful castles of the Vicomtes (Viscounty) du Limousin, dating from the 10th century...

My experience, Explo description:

As early as the beginning of the 10th century, the founder of the dynasty, Archambaud the 1st, feels powerful enough to attack the famous Viscounty de Turenne. He was victorious of the the seat of 976, but one of his legs was stuck in a door. As the wound was poorly treated, Archambaud, who was already nicknamed as "the butcher", was then nicknamed "spoilt leg" (jambe pourrie).

Later, Archambaud III slaughtered several monks of the Tulle Abbey in 1070.
To get the forgiveness of the monks, the Comborn family started to be great benefactors of abbeys.

By the game of weddings and alliances, the power of the Comborn family expanded into the whole Limousin area. Then by marrying one of the Albret Ladies, they appeared to the rank of the ancestors of Henry IV.

But the Comborn dynasty early passed away. In the 15th century, the castle is abandoned. In 1558, it is sold to the Pompadour family. What remains burns in the 16th century.

The Lasteyrie family, who acquired it in 1649, rebuild in 1735 a castle : nowadays, it is through this castle that you can enter in the Comborn site.

The castle was defended 2 ramparts, and the only access opposite to the river was defended by 2 towers.

The monument is classified. You can still see the vestiges ruins of the 10th and 12th centuries, the ramparts, a dungeon basis, a stair of the old castle and the ruins of the chapel with its crypt. You can also visit a 15th century watchtower and a 18th century house, which is now a restaurant.
