The icon building of the Italian “Fascist” style…

My experience, Explo description:

In 1935, Mussolini decided to construct the Esposizione Universale Roma - EUR (Rome Universal Exhibition) to celebrate twenty years of Fascism. It was planned to open in 1942 (that’s why EUR was originally called E42). The complex, which is now a business district, was originally designed to connect the city to the sea. The planned exhibition never took place due to Italy’s defeat in World War II.

The EUR was designed by two rival factions in Italian architecture : the “reactionaries” (Marcello Piacentini) and the "progressives" (Giuseppe Pagano). Each faction was allowed to design some individual buildings within the complex. Nowadays, EUR offers a large-scale image of how urban Italy might have looked, if the Fascist regime had not fallen.

After the war, the unfinished Fascist buildings were completed by new buildings in a similar style, converting the site in a out-of-town business district, one of the first in Europe.

The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana is the most representative building of the “Fascist” style at EUR. It was built from 1938 to 1943. It is also called the “Colosseo Quadrato” (the Square Colosseum).

Check out also if you have time the Prehistory and etnography museum (Museo preistorico ed etnografico) and the Popular tradition and art museum (Museo di arti e tradizioni popolari).

For a guided tour of the district, ask to the Rome Tourism board or go on : www.romaeur.it

My personal recommendations:

Have a look at the amazing museum of the Roman civilization. Walk around to see the different buildings of the EUR district. Don’t miss the San Pietro Church.

How getting there:

The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana is about 15mn walk (N) from the EUR Palasport station (subway, line B). Buses n°30, 170, 671, 714, 764 and 791 also get there.
