One of the twelve fortresses from the fortified Liege. It exploded August 15, 1914 killing 350 of its defenders under the rubble. Preserved in this state, it is only to have strong arms kept from 1890.

My experience, Explo description:

The Fort de Loncin 8km/5miles to the north of Liège played an important role in the resistance against the advance of the German troops in 1914.
One of the twelve fortresses from the fortified Liege. After incessant artillery fire it was destroyed when its magazine exploded.

It exploded August 15, 1914 killing 350 of its defenders under the rubble. Preserved in this state, it is only to have strong arms kept from 1890.

One of the most beautiful museum of the WW1 (14-18) !

Guns are still there !

My personal recommendations:

If you want to visit a unique place that have been preserve and maintain to show the only fort which exploded.

How getting there:

From Liège,
take the ramp to E313/E40/Bruxelles/E42/Namur/Anvers
Take the exit onto A3/E40 toward Louvain/Bruxelles
Take exit 31 toward Juprelle/N694/Awans
Turn right at N3i
Go through 1 roundabout
At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Rue de la Chaussée/N3 heading to Ans/Liège
Continue to follow N3
Turn left at Rue des Héros
Destination will be on the left

Many restaurants near the main road.

The guided tour start at 2PM and last about 3 hours.
