A beautiful Roman villa on the heights of Malibu. Nice gardens and a unique collection of antiques.

My experience, Explo description:

J. Paul Getty was has rich oil man. In 1945, he made an 26 hectares acquisition on the heights of Malibu. Passionate by the arts, in 1954, Paul Getty opens the first J. Paul Getty Museum to expose his collection, largely constituted by Greek and Roman antiques.
In 1968, Paul Getty decides to recreate, on the property, a Roman country house of the 1st century after Jesus Christ : the Villa dei Papiri (located close to Herculanum and destroyed by the Vesuvio volcano).
The villa Getty opened its doors to the public in 1974. It was restored in 1997.

Visit the Antiques collection, located around the atrium... And have a nice walk in the gardens !

A short introductory film describes the history, collections, and setting of the Getty Villa. (At the atrium entrance, on the right).

My personal recommendations:

The visits are limited and are made on inquiry. You can obtain in prerequisites a ticket in Getty centre, otherwise, inquire about internet or by telephone. The entrance of the car park is paying $8, but if you come the evening (finally, little before the 5 pm), you might get permission to get in for free.

How getting there:

17985 Pacific Coast Highway
Pacific Palisades, California 90272

A tip to eat:

There is a café at the villa.
