Picturesque gorges decorated with strange shaped rocks, Pommerol is also the name of an old provencal village with an original history...

My experience, Explo description:

The old village of Pommerol was abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century.

The land on which its ruins were standing was purchased by a surgeon who was also a ruins lover: Dr. Paul Vuillard. He rebuilt the village between 1973 and 2001.

The church of the 19th ° has been beautifully restored.

The property has been sold in 2001 to a cooperative society.

The Pommerol river has dug a deep valley whose walls are decorated with exceptional carved stones.

On top of the cliffs, you can see also many limestone rocks, subject to erosion, who created the arches of monoliths...

The old village of Pommerol is located in a magnificent site in the middle of mountains and green landscapes.

The 14 permanent residents in Pommerol reside in the hamlets of Le Moulin and La Fromagère. There is only one farmer in activity with its few crops and traditional animals, providing to tourist his farm products.

The Châtelas castle was rebuilt at the end of the 20th, located at the top of the hill, well above the village.

The Beaume Ecrite cave (or Saracens cave) is an eagle nest perched 1,350m high in a rocky bar that crowns the Saint-Roman mountain, at the West of the village.

It contains parietal engravings (symbolic and birds drawings) dating from the iron age. Access is difficult and exposed.

How getting there:

Pommerol gorges can be visited driving along the D538 road that connects La Charce (north) to Rosans (south), passing by the Fromagère pass (1072m). The gorges are located 2 km south of La Charce.
