This spot is very singular. But still, it is not so famous yet. Cool job Bolino!

Ok. Let's be honest. The place is not beautiful, but it is a unique place in Europe, technically fascinating to visit.

My experience, Explo description:

The Varberg radio station, close to Grimeton was built in 1922-24. Exceptionally well preserved, is a symbol of the early wireless transatlantic communication. The site contains equipments of transmission, including a system of antennas with 6 pylons of 127 m of height...

Although they are not any more used regularly, equipments are still in working order.

Carl Åkerblad, the architect, drew the main building in neo-classic style, and pylons, the highest built in Sweden at that time, are the work of the engineer Henrik Kreüger. The site offers an exceptional illustration of the development of the communications : it is the only survivor of the big radio transmission stations, based on techniques previous to the era of the electronics.

Visit the interesting museum of telecommunications inside the building.

Outside, a 1km long trail allows to walk in the middle of the antennas.

My personal recommendations:

If you are kind enough, maybe a one of the passionate volunteers who maintain the site will make for you a conducted tour :-)

How getting there:

The radio station’s six pylons are visible from highway E6/E20, east of the city of Varberg. From E6/E20 take exit 53 or 54 an follow signposts “Radiostationen Grimeton”. After about 8 km you will be there.

A tip to eat:

There is a little bar at the museum.
