A nuclear plant. Abandoned, but not achieved yet...

My experience, Explo description:

In 1976, Cuba and the Soviet Union decided to build and co-manage a nuclear power plant in Juragua. This project was never completed and the work is still ongoing, or rather abandoned. This project should produce 2 reactors of 440 megawatts, expected to cover 15% of Cuba's energy needs, heavily dependent on imported oil. But as the project is located within 300 km from the Florida Keys, the U.S. worried and strongly opposed to the project.

The work began seriously in 1983, but in 1992, with the breakup of the USSR and Cuba's economic difficulties, the project was stopped while the first reactor was completed at 90% yet!

Today, one can observe the huge facilities, including the dome, which can even be seen from Cienfuegos. Access is prohibited to foreigners.

My personal recommendations:

Not far from the plant, you can also observe the buildings of the Ciudad Nuclear artificial city.

How getting there:

If you have a car, the best way to approach it is to take the road that connects Juragua to Castillo de Jagua (Massive old fortress controlling the entrance of the inlet that connects the bahia de Cienfuegos to the sea).

Otherwise, go directly to the fort by ferry (1CUC, frequent departures, pier at the intersection of Calle 25 and Avenida 46 in Cienfuegos). From the fort, you can see the nuclear plant installations.

A tip to sleep:
