The access to Kara Tepe is restricted. The monastery is lost in the middle of the international border between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan... It is surrounded with electrified walls. If you want to access the site, you need an official authorization, or to ask the soldiers who guard the site entry (a few dozen meters north from the Hakkim al Termezi museum)...

If you can’t access to Kara Tepe, go to Fayaz Tepe, 2km north, where the access is not restricted.

My experience and personal tips:

From Samarkand, you can rent a taxi with a driver for 2 days to go to Termez. Might be really usefull cause you will need a car once you are at Termez to visit all the places around. Total price for 2 days : 100 euros.

How getting there:

The site is about 10km (NW) from Termez, driving along the M39 road going to Samarkand.
Whatever many guides might say, getting to Termez is not so complicated. Unfortunately, not many buses and trains are getting there. 3 direct flights to Tashkent every day. Taxi from Samarkand (single way : 40euros : 7h drive...).
