When we walk on these beautiful Vosges mountain ridges between the valleys of Münster and Orbey, it is hard to imagine that 17,000 young soldiers have died for nothing between June and October 1915...

Explo History and Description: 

In the battle for the Fecht Valley, the French staff wanted absolutely the ridges that dominated Münster, at the North. But in the absence of surprise effect, this operation met a strong resistance of the German who had time to strengthen their position. Attacking the ridge picks in theses conditions could lead to nothing else but to slaughter.

Since the end of July, the French took position on the summits, but could not operate. Many counter-attacks from both sides tool place in October. Back to its starting positions, the front didn’t move until 1918.

On the French side, 17 hunters battalions were dashed to 80 % (10,000 dead). "Le Linge" is also called "La Tombe des Chasseurs" : the tomb of hunters.

Baerenstall cemetery, take the path that goes to the Schratzmaennele. Visit the shelters and the career. Follow the ridge to the South to Barrenkopf (blockhouse) then Kleinkopf (shelters). Down to the TV antennas and road (orientation table). Follow the road to Hohrod and before the hairpin bend curve, turn back to the North in the direction of Glasborn (farm-hostel). Visit the shelters of the sector (Côte 941) and join the road leading to to the Memorial. Interesting visit.

From there, German cemetery is just 10 minutes away . For more sport fans, from Glasborn farm, you can make a round trip to the Wettstein French cemetery : add one and half hour.

The Memorial Museum visit :

  • visit the trenches, shelters and German fortifications. It is amazing to see the contrast between the relatively comfortable German trenches (built with stones and concrete), and French trenches, much more exposed because located below, and furnished in a very summary manner...
  • the Museum, gathering many objects of that time : weapons, uniforms, models, cards and documents, video documents.

Visit the French military cemetery of Wettstein and the German cemetery of Baerenstall.
