The small village of Ménil-sur-Belvitte, in the heart of the peaceful Lorraine campaign, hosts a nice military cemetery, with a appealing War Memorial.

Explo History and Description:

In 1914, Ménil-sur-Belvitte was the siege of 2 major battles :

the battle of Charmes (from 24th to 26th August 1914)
the battle of the Haute-Meurthe (from 20th August to 13th September 1914)

Between the 2 German breakthroughs, the mountains of "La Chipotte" constituted an important resistance point.

The cemetery has 1.100 graves.

Opposite to the cemetery stands a memorial in honour of the 13th, 14th and 21st corps of Dubail 1st French army and of the 15th corp of De Castelnau 2nd French army.

My experience and personal tips:

It is interesting to discover the battle of the "Charmes breach" by visiting the French and German military cemeteries. This pilgrimage has the advantage to bring you to many different picturesque villages. In addition, military cemeteries are peaceful and well maintained places.
