Rambervillers is a peacefull little town on the Mortagne river in Lorraine.

Explo History and Description:

The Mortagne battle took place from the 24 August to the 11 September 1914. For a few days, the front will be less than five kilometres away from the city, and the first French General Dubail will block the German advance.

The military cemetery :
1600 bodies of French soldiers, from Bazien and Xafévillers.

In the necropolis, a square of graves is dedicated to soldiers coming from various countries :

1 Scottish soldier
10 British of the Indian Labour Coy
1 Chinese (2d group of Chinese workers)
11 Polish soldiers
1 Romanian soldier
24 Russian soldiers, most dead in 1918

In Rambervillers, have also a look at the "renaissance" city hall (Hotel de Ville) built in 1581 with red sandstone.

It is interesting to discover the battle of the "Charmes breach" by visiting the French and German military cemeteries. This pilgrimage has the advantage to bring you to many different picturesque villages. In addition, military cemeteries are peaceful and well maintained places.
