The ancient city of Muang Sing is almost square shaped, surrounded by moats and laterite city walls. The site area is about 100 hectares...

My experience, Explo description:

Muang Sing means "city of the Lion" and can be dated to the 13th and 14th centuries. It was an ancient Khmer frontier city.

There are 4 main monuments to visit inside the city wall.

Monument 1 is built with laterite blocks decorated with stucco reliefs. A Prasat tower like ruin stands at the centre. Previously, a radiating Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara statue was installed in this building.

The monument was laid out in the form of a Mandala : a mystical diagram of the universe. Mount Meru, at the centre of the world, is symbolized by the Prasat in the middle of the sanctuary, while the continents and oceans are represented by ponds, ditches and dikes.

Monument 2 consisted of 3 towers lying in a north-south direction. Many antiquities were found in this monument, including bronze figures of Naga.

Monuments 3 and 4 are just little ruins, not really worth to see.

My personal recommendations:

The city is really vast. The best is to have a car to visit it. If you can and if the Guest house is open, it is really worth to stay a night there. Nice ambiance with the ruins and the sight on the river...

How getting there:

By car. From Kanchanaburi, take the 323 (to Sai Yok, Tha Sao). Drive about 40km. Then make a left on the 3455 (to Baan Kao) and drive 5 more km South.

A tip to eat:

There is a restaurant.

A tip to sleep:

There is a guest house in the historical park. It is located on the south, close to the river. Call in advance to be sure it is open !
