Mucubaji Lagoon is a very touristee lake. But it is also the starting point of 5 lovely excursions that you can relish while visiting the Andes. A good and easy way to discover the Venezuelian Andes.

My experience, Explo description:

Mucubaji Lagoon is usually very foggy. There is a strange ambiance. As it is very close to the main road, there are many tourists and cars.

Between March and September, fishing from the lagoon deck is allowed to those holding a fishing license issued by The Agricultural Ministry Office in Merida or Mucuruba. Else, some locals run a little attraction where you can fish truitas.

From Mucubaji, the most popular excursion is to Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon). You can either walk or ride a little horse (fees for riding may include a guide). 2-3h to go. Very nice a easy tour, perfect to discover the local flora.

Else, you can make 2 other excursions, that are much less frequented : hike up to Laguna de Los Patos (Ducks Lagoon) and Pico Mucuñuque (Mucuñuque Peak, 4,672 m).

This latest excursion should only be undertaken with warm clothes. Ask the park rangers before if you can go.

My personal recommendations:

There is a ranger station at the lake. You can get all the information you need before starting your excursion. Else, for lazy ones, you can just enjoy one of the local restaurants and food shops and specialities, while looking at the numerous local tourists.

How getting there:

Take the main road N°1 from Apartaderos to Santo Domingo.

You can reach it either by driving into the National Park after paying a fee at the entrance, or walking for about ten minutes from the main road.

A tip to eat:

At the ranger station, or at the entrance of the park (on the road N°7). Alps atmosphere !

A tip to sleep:

No place to sleep. But you can camp. Ask for permission to the rangers. Beware, temperature is really cold at night.

Useful information:
Entry fees:

Entry to the park : $2 per car.

Access security:

Take some warm clothes with you.
