The vestige of a huge crater, with a rich flora to discover, and many trails.

My experience, Explo description: 

160,000 years ago, the meeting of the magma with groundwater created a huge quantity of water vapour. Due to the pressure, the tank ceiling exploded, projecting rocks more than 10 km around. At his place was formed a wide crater or maar, 1.5 km in diameter, which became a lake later. It was gradually filled by sedimentary deposits, giving rise to a bog.

The access chimney has been measured, it is more than 400m depth !

Exploitation of peat, mainly for heating, continued till 1964 with a maximum of activity during the 1940-1944s.

The Narces are a very rich biological environment.

Hiking trails around of the Narces : 4 km starting from the village, 1h45, many explanatory panels about peat exploitation and the natural environment.

Attention : it is a nature reserve and classified site. A particular flora has survived : there are carnivorous plants (drosera), a variety of gentian...
Take care of them !

From the entrance of the church, looking in the direction of Mézenc mount, you can sees 2 almost symmetrical rock formations, locally called "the teeth of the devil".

Go to the fresh Chantemerle cascade.
