When you stay in Nong Kiaow, you can make a little tour walk to Pha Tok Cave, an historic cave located in a cliff face...

My experience, Explo description:

The cave was used during the second Indochina war in the 1960s as a hideout during American bombings. A bamboo ladder was constructed to reach the entrance, and the floor was leveled.

The remains of the old ladder can still be seen, but a new wooden staircase has now been built.

Nearby is a small, wild but easy to visit cave called Tham Bank (Bank Cave). The main passage has a nice keyhole profile.

My personal recommendations:

If you are interested in such case, do not miss to visit the Vieng Xian hidden city : this cave complex is much more impressing !

How getting there:

The cave is about 2km (SE) from Nong Kiaow, on the right side of the road N°1 direction to Xam Neua.

A tip to sleep:

Many guest houses in Xam Neua.
