Phanum Rung is an amazing Khmer temple located on the top of a former volcano...

My experience, Explo description:

Phanum Rung was built between the 10th and the 13th century. It was dedicated to Shiva.

This temple has been hosting many festivals and processions for 8 centuries.

Thailand’s Department of Fine Arts spent 17 years restoring the complex to its original state from 1971 till 1988.

Once per year (April : the morning of the 15th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar), the sun rays go through the temple 15 doors.

My personal recommendations:

Go to visit the temple 1or 2 hours before the end of the day, to enjoy the sunset on the ruins and the wonderful sight.

How getting there:

Take the highway n°24 between Nang Rong and Prakhon Chai. Drive about 13km (W), and turn right when you arrive in E San Khet (Rd n°2117). But actually, you just need to follow the road signs : the site is very well indicated.

A tip to eat:

There is a little food shop just under the car park.

A tip to sleep:

There is a guest house in the historical park. But it is closed most of the time. To bad, it would an amazing place to overnight ! However, you can always ask to the Thailand Fine Art Department whether the guest house is open or not. Contact :

Else, there is no major city located close to Phanom Rung. You will need to drive !
