The Plaza de Armas square is a very pleasant place to come to cool under the shade of palm and Ceiba trees, or to contemplate the baroque façades and arches that surround the square.

My experience, Explo description:

The oldest square in the city: this square was the ancient political and administrative heart of the capital. The place was built in 1520, shortly after the founding of the city. At that time, it was called Plaza de Iglesia, as a church (the Parroquial Mayor) stood on the site of current Palacio de los Capitanes Generales.

The name of Plaza de Armas (Plaza de Armas) was adopted in the 16th century, when the colonial Governor (who then lived in the Castillo de la Real Fuerza), used the site for military training.

During the week, the booksellers set up their stalls here and offer many rare and original works.

My personal recommendations:

At the center of the square, you can rest in a garden, hosting lovely fountains and a statue of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes (one of the men who put Cuba on the rails to independence in 1868), work of Sergio Lopez Mesa completed in 1955.

How getting there:

Hum... Hard to miss the square...

A tip to eat:

Many (touristic) restaurants around the square. I recommand to go have a lunch at the Bodega Onda (Calle Obrapia, south from the square)

A tip to sleep:
