Almagro is a small town of 9,000 inhabitants, which has a rich history, illustrated by its monuments and in particular its Plaza Mayor, one of the most singular of Spain.

On one of its sides, you can see the "Comedias Corral" outdoor theatre (17th century): the Almagro Theatre Festival made it really famous.

My experience, Explo description:

Almagro owes its rich heritage to the Calatrava Knights. Indeed, this Cisterian monk-soldiers order had its headquarters in the town from 1222 to the 15th century.

The economic development of the city is linked to the Almaden mines.

Almagro was the capital of the La Mancha province on the 18th century.

In the 17th and 18th centuries were created the lace Royal Manufactures, which will gather more than 8,000 workers. One can still see lace craftmen at work.

The place was built at the Renaissance by the bankers of the House of Austria, the Fugger or Fúcares, who, due to the financial problems of King Charles the 1st, benefited from the income of the Almadén mercury mines (belonging to the order of Calatrava).

They settled there with their directors and allowed the city to develop and beautify.

Originally designed as a place of weapons, the square has the shape of a long asymmetric rectangle, bordered on each side by wooden galleries, peinted in green, with 85 Tuscan style columns. The current aspect is not the original one because the upper corridors were public and accessible by narrow stairs. But on the 18th and 19th centuries, these corridors were privatized by the owners of the houses.

Have a look at the famous "Corral de Comedias" theatre.
