Famous thanks its beautiful Marquise, the Pompadour castle is also a world renowned place for horse lovers.

My experience, Explo description:

King Louis XV created the national haras (stud) in 1761. Choiseul continued its development.

After the French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte transformed the Orangerie for its light cavalry needs.

The stud farm, the stables and the riding school :
Pompadour is the cradle of anglo-arabic horse race. Puy-Marmont stables (in front of the castle) shelters 65 various breeds : Arab and anglo-arabic, Ardennais, Percherons and Breton horses.

During the visit, you will learn all about the horse races, the site history and its equipment.

If you are lucky, you might also see a horse race.

Jumenterie nationale de Rivière, the only one in France of its kind, is the flagship of a 333ha domain, where the stables neighbours the ruins of an old castle and a Gothic chapel, both from the 15th century.

Visit teaches all about the horse motherhood and birth. If you come in the spring, you will enjoy vast prairies populated with young foals strolling close to their mother. Beautiful view on the Beyssac church.

The race track occupies 25 hectares. Thanks to its green hedges cut into an extension of the castle (of which it was formerly part of), it is one of the most beautiful in France.

It is also classified "first category" for jumping races. The track is 2.200m long. In summer, every Sunday, take place 7 races.

Festivities and animations of racing competitions, races and equestrian performances are held every summer. The program, dressage, jumping show, racing...

My personal recommendations:

There are five areas of interest to Pompadour :

  • the castle and gardens
  • the horse stallion stud
  • the orangerie
  • the female horse stud
  • the horse show

To visit each of these sites, you need to pay an additional charge. Special rates if you want to visit multiple sites.

A tip to sleep:

Club Med Pompadour, 3 km from the village.
In a splendid 60 hectares park with beautiful trees, you can enjoy many activities : horse riding, tennis, golf, hiking, gym...

And every evening performances take place !
