Very rocky peninsula with many cliffs. Ponta de Sao Lourenço is a nature reserve, which offers to visitors many wonderful sights of Madeira and Porto Santo island.

My experience, Explo description:

When you arrive to Madeira by plane, the first thing which you will see by the windows is a strange 8km long peninsula, which is sometimes less than 20m of wide and which goes eastward into the sea.

How getting there:

By car, drive to Caniçal, which is a former whaler port. The film Moby Dick was shot there. From there, follow the signs "Prainha / Baia d’abra". Pass the Post office, and the "Zona Franca" port. Then, drive 5 more km up to a platform where you can park. The road does not go further.
In summer time, a bus brings you to this car park.

A tip to eat:

No place to eat there. Take a picnic, and, above all, drinks. Be careful of the sun : there is no shade.

Useful information:
Visit duration:

3h walk tour

Entry fees:

Access security:

Some parts of the trail are very narrow and can be vertiginous for many people : you will cross a kind of natural bridge between two ilots, with 100m high cliffs on each side. For other people, this vertiginous landscapes will be exciting !
Do not make this tour in case of stormy weather.
