A village and its church on the Velay highlands.

My experience, Explo description:

Burle is the name given to the wind blowing from the north in winter in central France, on the eastern side of the Massif Central and on the Velay highlands.

The Burle creates a frosty atmosphere, raising snow storms, causing snow piles sometimes several meters thick.

During the long winter months, men and animals live in low houses, designed to protect them from the rigorous climate : thick walls, steep roofs covered with stubble or lauzes (slates) of phonolite (which is a volcanic rock).

The wind is used to run many wind turbines, which do not always fit harmoniously into the landscape.

Have a look at the beauty and simplicity of this very pure Romanic Church in stone, with in warm colours, covered with orange lichens.

Do not miss to check out the curious bell tower, and the thick of the walls protecting from the Burle.

Walk into the village to check out the houses and their impressive walls and solid roofs. In winter, there are many opportunities for hiking skiing, snow shoeing and even dog sledding.

1km to the east lies a small volcanic crater lake (or maar). It is a geological phenomenon, obtained when the lava meets underground waters : the water is vaporized and the pressure blew the rocks that are above.

Around the lake, you can practice fishing and boating.

My personal recommendations:

For lovers of mystery, you absolutely need to see "the triangle of Burle".
