The famous Sagrada Familia offers the steep spectacle of a gigantic and fantastic cathedral which is still under construction. Surrounded by cranes, it evokes the building of the medieval cathedrals...

My experience, Explo description:

Begun in 1882, the Sagrada Familia is the emblematic work a Genious architect : Antonio Gaudi. He devoted 40 years of his life to this work.

When he died in 1926, he left many plans and models of which many parts unfortunately disappeared during the 1936 civil war. Gaudi’s spirit is more or less respected in the current work : if you want to notice differences, you can compare the portal of the Nativity, carried out under the direct control of Gaudi, and the modern portal of the Passion. These changing can be explained by modern techniques and aesthetics, as well as the need to limit the costs of building.

The continuation of the project is a symbolic challenge for the autonomous region of Catalonia. For many years, the works have been slowed or stopped due to the lack of money. It should be noted that neither the State nor the commune has invested one cent in the building. Only the generosity of the Catalans - and tourists - allows the continuation of the work.

The Sagrada Familia project involves the construction of 12 steeples (one for each Apostle), 4 more for the evangelists, another dedicated to the Virgin and the most important (170m in height) crowned with the typical Gaudí 4 arms cross, symbolizing Jesus Christ.

These parabolic steeples have coil stairs that surround a space where shall be tubular bells that Gaudí has studied for years : they will ring thanks to compressed air and percussion (these bells are one of the last items to be constructed in the cathedral).

The building should be completed in 2026, for the centenary of the Gaudi death.

The Nativity Portal :

The front of the Nativity is the only part of the temple directly built by Gaudí. When Gaudí died in 1926, only the tower of Saint Barnabas was completely finished and the other 3 very advanced. The 2 central towers are 107m high and external are 98m high.

The decoration includes many topics connected with plants carvings, evoking underground sculptures, looking like a bit a "Marshmallow" style...

The facade of the Sagrada Familia Nativity was recently recognized as "Heritage of the human race" by UNESCO.

The Passion Portal :
These 4 towers were completed in 1976.
They have a height 112m for the 2 main, and 107m for the external ones.

Elevators :
Lifts are opened all year-round. They arrive to a 65m height (front of the Passion) and 55m (front of the Nativity).
Price : 2 €.

The crypt was designed by Francesc de Paula Villar in Gothic still in 1882.
In the crypt, you can see the graves of Joseph Maria Bocabella and his descendants (he was the promoter of the cathedral) and Gaudí.

Sagrada Familia’s crypt was recently recognized as "Heritage of the human race" by UNESCO.

The Museum : models of the Colònia Güell, original drawings of Gaudí and Sagrada Familia models.

My personal recommendations:

Go to the top of the towers. These towers are connected by bridges. You will enjoy a wonderful view over the Sagrada Familia and Barcelona, emotions guaranteed. Not recommended for persons subject to the dizziness

Access security:

Accessibility for the disabled :
The main nave is located in four metres in height above the level of the street, both on the side of the façade of the passion (with inclined plane for wheelchairs) that since the entry of the facade of the Nativity (currently open) accessible level by stairways and also inclined planes.

In any case, you should not forget that the building is under construction : it makes inevitable some frequent limitations of access.
