A little and odd Romaninc-Gothic church, that could have been the capital of the Christians...

My experience, Explo description:

The church was first a Romanic building. It was reorganized during the Gothic era. But you can still see the church Romanic style bell tower, constructed like a defence strongpoint.

Have a look at the external walls of the apsis, sculptured with arcades, felines, birds and other animals.

Do not miss the Merovingian sarcophagus, as well as the 12th and 15th centuries frescoes.

My personal recommendations:

A legend says that the Pope ordered to build 2 churches. One close to the Gironde river in Moulis, the other one in Rome, close to the Tiber river. He would settle the capital of the Christians in the first finished church... The Saint Saturnin church has been finished only one day after its Roman competitor...

How getting there:

The church is in Moulis en Medoc (5km NE from Castelnau de Médoc). Take the road D5 to get there.

A tip to sleep:

Sleep in Les Sapins Domain guest house in Bouqueyran (2km W).

Useful information:
