Perched on its pedestal red sandstone, the ruins of the castle dominate the Pierre Percée small village and the lake of the same name.

Explo History and Description:

Located at a 500m altitude, with a 1.200 m2 surface, this rock supported on the 10th century lords who were sacking the region.

At the beginning of the 11th century, Salm family took possession of the premises, thanks to a marriage with Agnes de Langenstein. She did strengthen the defences by adding a square tower, and digging a well of approximately 32m depth and 9m in diameter, which gave the castle its nickname : Pierre Percée ("perforated stone").

In 1135, the Bishop of Metz, Etienne de Bar, besieged this fort (supposed to be impregnable) by constructing 3 other castles around :

  • Dame Galle, whose ruins are still visible at the foot of the "pierre à cheval" stone.
  • La roche des corbeaux
  • Ortomont

the Castle after a 1 year siege.

From 13th to the 14th centuries, the castle was occupied by the Templier Knights.

During the 30 Years War, the Swedish, allied to the French, took and burnt the fortification. Then Richelieu dismantle it, as he did with many other castle in Lorraine. Later, the stones served to the construction of village houses.

Going down to the cemetery, you will discover an interesting memorial designed by Sartorio.

In 1916, Antoine Sartorio (1885-1988), sculptor born in Corsica, is part of the 363th infantry regiment who contains the German troops on the front of the Chapelotte pass battle (with a violent and inexorable mine war).

During his stay in the region and his moments of freedom, the artist expressed his patriotic feelings and his perception of the Great War by sculpting the sandstone stones near the battlefield. That is how he carved an imposing fresco at the entrance to the cemetery of Pierre Percée. This work will be classified "Monument Historique" in 1923.

For memory, at the end of the conflict, his talent for sculpture was recognized on a national scale, and he realized the Cenotaph under the Arc de Triomphe, a fresco on the Palais de Chaillot in Paris or the monument to the "Poilus" soldiers erected along the Corniche in Marseille.

Pierre-Percée lake is the largest artificial lake of Lorraine with its 304 hectares of surface and its 32 km of edges.

This mountain lake has the charm of the great Canadian lakes by its unusual form, and its wooded slopes covered with pines and hardwood.
