The highest waterfall of the world: 980m. Famous, but unique.

Explo History and Description:

The height of the falls is so great that before getting anywhere near the ground, the water is atomized by the strong winds and turned into mist.

Sir Walter Raleigh is sometimes said to have discovered Angel Falls, but these claims are considered "far-fetched". They were spotted in 1912 by the Venezuelan explorer Ernesto Sanchez La Cruz, but he did not publicize his discovery.

Angel comes from the name of Jimmie Angel. He was a US aviator who flew over them on 16 November 1933, while he was searching for a valuable ore bed.

Returning on October 9, 1937, Angel tried to land his Flamingo monoplane atop Auyan-tepui, but the plane was damaged when the wheels sunk into the marshy ground. He and his 3 companions, including his wife Marie, were forced to descend the tepui on foot. It took them 11 days to make their way back to civilization, but news of their adventure spread, and the waterfall was named "Angel Falls" in his honour.

Angel’s plane remained on top of the tepui for 33 years before being lifted out by helicopter. It was restored at the Aviation Museum in Maracay and now sits outdoors on the front of the airport at Ciudad Bolívar.

The trip to the waterfall is really nice, with rapids, and amazing views on the tepuis.

Try to be as early as you can at the Salto Angel. Clouds often raise around lunch, and after, as the waterfall is really high, you won’t be able to observe the top of the waterfall.

The access trail to the viewpoint is 1h long to go up.

My experience and personal tips:

The way up to the waterfall base camp is 4-5h long by boat. Take a resistant plastic bag for your camera. I advise you to sleep at the camp. If so, you will enjoy a lovely night in a hammock with a direct view on the Salto Angel ! Take some repellent and a pent.

How getting there:

Most of the people visit Canaima and the waterfalls with the help of a tour agency. It is easier because usually you have to organize a flight to go to Puerto Ordaz or Ciudad Bolivar (but a night bus is better because you will arrive very early, and then you can catch the planes to Canaima, which leave also very early), then take a small plane to reach Canaima Camp, find a location there (and it is often crowded), get a boat to go up to Salto Angel and the different waterfalls, and back...

For 3 days and 2 nights, all included, from Caracas, I paid around $300. This is not the cheapest price. If you plan it in advance, you can maybe pay "only" $200.

A tip to sleep:

If you have time, try to spend one night in the hammock camp in the jungle down the waterfall (included in my tour price).
