For WW1 enthusiasts looking for vestiges of 1917-1918 fightings, in a very lovely region of wooded hills overlooking the Piave valley.

Explo History and Description:

The fortress church, also called sanctuary of the Madonna delle Rocca, is a church built on the ruins of a medieval fortress.

Due to its strategic location on a hill, it was used as an observatory by the Italians, and served as a target to the Austro-Hungarian artillery from November 1917 to October 1918. The church was repeatedly hit.

Have a look at the monument built in memory of the fighting between Papal dragons and Habsburg troops on 8th and 9th May 1848.

Continue the road to the sanctuary of the Madonna. In a curve, 300m before reaching the terminal esplanade, you will discover the entrance of an underground Gallery.

The sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca was rebuilt. From there, you can enjoy a very beautiful and extended view over the plain of Treviso.

How getting there:

You can park :
1) near the 1848 monument
2) on the esplanade of the sanctuary.

If you like walking (as I do !), it is very pleasant to leave the car down (close to the 1848 monument) and walk on the lovely shady road. 1.3km to go and 80m declivity : 1/2 h.
