A unique collection of sovietic era paintings: almost 100,000! This museum is worth the trip to Nukus!

Explo History and Description:

During the comunist era, despite the risks of been denounced and deported to Siberia, Savitsky managed to collect and save almost 100,000 paintings of artists reprimated by soviets. He stored the paintings deep into the museum undergrounds. As Nukus is quite far from Moscow, the place was quite safe.

Only 5% of Stavitsky collection is nowadays exposed. If you want to see more, you need to go to the former museum, which is closed to the public (private visit for 40 dollars).

The museum is divided in 3 parts : archeology, local traditions and paintings.

My experience and personal tips:

Do not hesitate to take a guided tour if you want to visit the Savitsky museum (3 dollars). It is so much more interesting !
Do not hesitate to ask the museum for guides to organize you a trip to the citadels located around Nukus and Beruni.
