Very interesting Gothic church made of red sandstone. It is the second biggest in Alsace by its dimensions.

My experience, Explo description:

Wissembourg owes its origin to a Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century.

Of the Romanic abbey church of the 11th century only remains the tower.

The present church was built in the late 13th century.

Outside, the church has a Romanic square tower (on West side) and an octagonal Gothic tower.

The front side of the church has no portal : the main entrance is on the south lower side.

The north side is bordered by the gallery of a former Gothic cloister (14th century), remained unfinished. There are large tombstones of former abbots of Wissembourg.

The interior is Gothic, with a typical Rhine style.

Frescoes of the 16th were restored, including a 11m tall St. Christopher, holding the infant Jesus in his arms.

The chancel is lighted by 13th century restored windows.

My personal recommendations:

Go to the garden "Stanislas" (in street : rue de la Sous-Prefecture). It is a small oasis of greenery and calm, which has one of the prettiest views on the church. Private garden belongs to a store (antiques, decoration).

A tip to eat:

12km south-west, farm-inn : Moulin des 7 fontaines, in Drachenbronn (see related article).
