Breisach, the capital of Kayserstuhl, is famous for the interior decoration of the St-Stephanmünster cathedral.

My experience, Explo description:

Breisach is currently located on the right bank of the Rhine, but this has not always been the case ! The capricious course of the Rhine sometimes brought Breisach on its left bank (Alsace Kingdom) or on its right side since the last great flood of 1296.

Perched on a rocky promontory, the city has often played a strategic role : from the Romans until the 19th century, under the thumb of the bishop of Basel, the Austrian, the French, and the German...

The cathedral is perched on a rocky hill, overlooking the Rhine and the rest of the city.

Rich interior decoration, late Gothic style :

  • 1) Very aerial rood screen (from the end of the 15th).
  • 2) Beautiful retable in carved wood (1526) with a very detailed set of leaves, chips, hair. The central panel represents the Virgin crowned by God and the Christ.
  • 3) Mural paintings of Martin Schongauer (Colmar, end of the 15th) on the first west bay.
My personal recommendations:

From the terrace, beautiful view on the Rhine valley...
