Visit an extraordinary telescope lost in a lunar landscape...

Explo History and Description:

The first telescope (aiming at studying zodiacal light and light dispersed by interplanetary material) entered service in 1964.

Its geographical location (between the eastern and western solar observatories), together with the clarity and excellent quality of the sky, mean that the Observatorio del Teide is ideally suited for studying the sun. For this reason it is home to Europe’s finest solar telescopes.

There are a residence and facilities, but they are only dedicated to scientific and technical staff.

As you can understand, the site is not open to public, but the Astrophysics Institute organises visits to the Observatory for colleges and groups to make knowledge about astronomy accessible to everyone.

The Visitor Centre is housed in an empty dome, which has been equipped to teach visitors about science. The centre has a capacity of around 40 people and is used to explain what an observatory is, how telescopes work and the importance of Astronomy for the human race.

My experience and personal tips:

As the access is really restricted, please give a phone call (see contact) before you go to the observatory to know if you can visit it or not.
