On the site of a former WW1 military transit camp lies a small cemetery, in the middle of the Landes pine forest.

Explo History and Description:

The Courneau camp consisted in 1916 (the date of its construction) of 400 wooden huts that could accommodate up to 20,000 soldiers and a hospital of 950 beds.

This camp hosted :

  • March 1916 to October 1917 : a battalion of French "Tirailleurs Sénégalais". The term "Senegalese" named all the soldiers coming from the countries of the former French West Africa.
  • October 1917 to March 1918 : a brigade of 8,000 Russians.
  • July 1918 to May 1919 : 15,000 artillery men of the United States.
