Out of the time museum to discover the History of the Turkish Navy.

My experience, Explo description:

Istanbul Naval Museum is Turkey’s largest maritime museums. It is located in Besiktas, not far from the mausoleum and statue of Barbaros Hayreddin (the famous Turkish admiral of the 16th century). It contains a collection of 20,000 pieces, exhibited in 2 buildings and the garden.

The Museum is hosted in a former small building of the Navy, constructed in 1897. The collection was transferred to the Museum in 1961.

The main exhibition building is 3 floors high and has an area of 1500 m². It hosts 4 large halls and 17 rooms. Each exhibition area and lounge has the name of the wind direction. There, you can see mariner clothes, manuscripts, ship models, flags, maps, tables, monogram and badges, paintings, weapons, torpedoes, parts of the private yacht of Ataturk...

In the garden you can see for instance the impressive vestige of a old submarine.

You can visit the gallery of historical boats from another entrance, located on the seaward side. The boats displayed were used by palace members and other important personalities in the 18th-20th centuries. You can admire sailing and rowing boats, as well as replicas.

My personal recommendations:

After the visit, make a break in the lovely café located on the Bosporus close to the Barbaros Hayrettinpasa Iskelesi boat platform. You will enjoy the ballet of ferries crossing the Bosporus to link Europe to Asia.

How getting there:

Hayrettin Iskelesi Sok., Besiktas. It is very close to the Besiktas ferry terminal.

  • Besiktasferry landing (Besiktas iskelesi) : from Kadiköy or Üsküdar.
