Between Madrid and Cuenca stand the " Escorial de la Mancha" mountains. There, you can visit an interesting monastery...

My experience, Explo description:

This fortified monastery has a shape that reminds the Escorial mountains. It was chosen in 1174 to house the headquarters of the Saint-Jacques order.

The monastery is located in the vast Uclés fortress (12th century) : it is a 1km2 building, surrounded by walls, bastions and towers.

The new building (Renaissance style) was built in the 16th century. However, the southern front is baroque style. The conception of the building is the work of Pedro de Ribera : it has 2 large doors, decorated with shells carved on Saint-Jacques crosses. The front is decorated with armours, flags and a apostle bust.

The lobby provides access to a double cloister court. It hosts a water tank made of stone with baroque decoration and a blazon with the arms of the Saint-Jacques order.

The refectory has a wonderful pine wood ceiling decorated with 36 boxes representing the Knights of the order, chaired by Emperor Charles V.

The vestry has 2 large windows decorated with sculptures.

The church, built by Francisco de Mora, consists of a nave with transepts and several chapels on its sides (16th century), bound together by small doors.

It is worth mentioning the grand altarpiece of Francisco Ricci.

The magnificent main staircase elegantly connects the Court on the second floor.
