Located at the confluence of the Ardèche and the Fontaulière rivers, the fortress of Ventadour, standing atop a rocky ridge, is really impressive.

My experience, Explo description:

Due to its location, overlooking the confluence of 2 rivers, this site was dedicated to control all the traffic between the Rhone and Velay valleys.

This building was the object of bitter struggles since its construction in the 12th century until it was abandoned and eventually started to be demolished in the 18th.

In 1968, the ruins are bought by Pierre Pottier, and an association is created for the preservation and reconstruction of the castle.

Going up by feet to the castle is about 10 minutes from the parking lot.

My personal recommendations:

Guided tour are organized by volunteers : contact the castle.

How getting there:

The castle is 13km from Aubenas

After Pont de Labeaume, turn right on the D 536 towards Montpezat / The Béage. After 500 meters, park on the roadside.
